Negredo on the way to Everton?

Everton have opened talks with Sevilla about a deadline day deal for Spain striker Alvaro Negredo after an £8.6m move for Leroy Fer collapsed. Everton will resume talks on Thursday morning about Negredo, 27, who is rated at £13m by Sevilla. However, he may be sold for much less before the transfer deadline because of financial difficulties at the club. The deal for Fer collapsed after a medical revealed a problem with the Netherlands midfielder's knee. Negredo has also been linked with Spurs and was wanted by Hull City in 2009. Everton are unlikely to revive a move for Club Brugge midfielder Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe, who almost moved to Goodison Park in August. Everton had hoped to parade 23-year-old Fer as their major January signing but FC Twente's refusal to restructure payments on the transfer scuppered their hopes. The Toffees were prepared to pay the full transfer fee but wanted the deal shaped around appearances and other clauses.

Dennis Bergkamp tipped to become head of Arsenal youth academy

Dennis Bergkamp is a leading candidate to succeed Liam Brady as the head of Arsenal's youth academy. The club have announced that Brady will step down from his current post before the end of May 2014 to take a different role within the organisation but he will assist in the search for his replacement and the hand-over process. Bergkamp, who enjoyed 11 successful seasons at Arsenal as a player, is now working as the assistant to the Ajax manager, Frank de Boer, with a connection to the Dutch club's youth development programme. Arsenal will seek a household name to take over from Brady, whose reputation will help them to attract the top youth players, and Bergkamp will come under consideration. The sooner Arsenal make the appointment, the quicker Brady will step aside. The 56-year-old Brady, an Arsenal playing legend, was appointed to oversee the club's academy in 1996 and he has helped to develop current first- team players such as Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs. "Liam ...

Everton set to sign £8.6m Leroy Fer from FC Twente

Everton have agreed an £8.6m fee for FC Twente's Dutch midfielder Leroy Fer. The 23-year-old has scored 10 goals in 29 appearances for Steve McClaren's FC Twente. A statement on Everton's official club website said: "He will now head to Merseyside to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical." Everton, who entertain West Brom on Wednesday, are fifth in the Premier League table, three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham. Fer has won two caps for the Netherlands, where he is nicknamed "The Bouncer" because of his size and strength. He started his career at Feyenoord before moving to Twente in 2011 and has been described as a combative midfielder. Everton boss David Moyes has been keen to sign a central midfielder for some time, having failed with a bid to sign Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe from Club Brugge in the summer. Instead he signed German international Thomas Hitzlsperger on a short- term deal which has been extended until the end of the season. It was re...

BREAKING NEWS: Xavi signs new Barcelona deal until 2016

Xavi  has signed a new contract with  Barcelona  until June 30 2016, the club have confirmed. The   midfielder, who turned 33 last Friday,  agreed to extend his current deal by two years back in December , and has now officially put pen to paper. Xavi signed the deal at Camp Nou alongside Barca president Sandro Rosell, vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu and sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta. Carles Puyol signed his own extension until 2016 on January 22 , but Lionel Messi is yet to make his commitment to the club - this time until 2018 - official. The  Blaugrana  are preparing to face rivals Real Madrid in Wednesday night's  clasico,   and Xavi had earlier stated that he remains fearful of what  los Blancos  are capable of. "These games are always unpredictable. We are really in good shape to compete right now but anything can happen in football, and particularly against Real Madrid," he told the  Times of India . "They wi...

CAF dismisses Egyptian ref who officiated Nigeria vs Zambia match

The 36 year old Egyptian referee who officiated the match between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Chipolopo of Zambia on Friday January 25th, has been dismissed from the on-going 2013 Africa Cup of Nations as a result of poor officiating. Ghead Grisha awarded a controversial penalty to Zambia in the 85th minute which enabled them draw level in the group C match. The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF immediately sent a protest letter to the Confederation of African Football, CAF, asking the football governing body to look into the questionable call by Grisha. A top official of CAF said today that Grisha 'has been sent home. He will have no further action at this Cup of Nations. His decisions did not tally with best practices of the refereeing profession and we would not allow anyone to start re-writing the rules of the game here'

Lateset Transfers Update (spain)

As expected, the winter transfer market has been very slow once again this season. The biggest moves have been out of Spain, with Rossi signing for Fiorentina, and Llorente agreeing terms with Juventus, albeit that his transfer will not take place until the end of the season. Guardiola has also confirmed he will be leaving us to join Bayern Munich in the summer, a bit of a surprise after so many rumours of his going either to England or Italy. Some La Liga clubs have added to their squads though, with Málaga, Osasuna, Deportivo and Granada the most active. There may though still be some interesting last minute signings, with Real Madrid looking to cover for Casillas after he broke a thumb midweek, and also trying to off-load the likes of Kaká. Many rumours also as to whether David Villa will go, although the only move really expected in the Nou camp is the loaning out of players such as Cuenca or Dos Santos for them to gain playing experience. Whatever happens in the next few days, the...

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is reportedly mulling over a move for Hellas Verona star Jorginho after a personal recommendation from one of his scouts.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is reportedly mulling over a move for Hellas Verona star Jorginho after a personal recommendation from one of his scouts. According to Sky Italia, Gunners boss Wenger has been urged to consider a late January move for 21-year-old Jorginho, with Italy-based scout Tony Banfield giving a glowing recommendation of the little known midfielder. It’s thought that Banfield, whose brother Neil is Wenger’s first-team coach at the Emirates Stadium, personally called the Gunners manager this week to urge him to try and do a deal. Jorginho has proved to be a revelation following his switch to Serie B club Verona from minnows AC Sambonifacese last year, and AC Milan and Napoli are also known to be tracking his progress. However, with the player reportedly boasting a £3.5million buyout clause exclusively available to overseas clubs, Arsenal would be in pole position if they pushed through a transfer. Jorginho, who was born in Brazil but grew up in Italy, would be eligi...

Podolski: I won't do a Walcott

Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski insists he is not about to join the queue of players knocking on manager Arsene Wenger's door to demand a central striking role. After Theo Walcott's long running campaign to be played as a frontman in Wenger's line-up ended successfully, the suspicion was that Podolski was next in line to put pressure on the Arsenal boss to play him in a more direct role. But the Germany international, who won rave reviews for his display in Wednesday night's 5-1 rout over West Ham from the left side of midfield, claims he is content to play as a makeshift winger, even though he admits the role reduces his scoring chances. "I think I can shoot more and get more goals when I play No. 10 or as a striker, but with the style of the game at Arsenal I do it well on the left side and I am happy to play there," Podolski told the Arsenal website. "I've scored seven goals now and have nine assists. It's an okay start for me. I have played on...

Baup: French exodus to continue

Marseille coach Elie Baup has warned the trend of big names moving from Ligue 1 to theEnglish Premier League will continue. A number of players have made the switch across the English Channel in recent seasons and this January transfer window has been no different. Loic Remy and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa are just some of the latest departures from the French top flight, and Baup feels the trend will continue. "What you see is that French football loses good players, all leaving for England, so the Premier League will be above all the other leagues," Baup said. "In France, because of the financial side, we will have to work on young players or with recruits not well known, and then we'll make them big, and they'll go to England again. We are entering this 'cycle'." Baup's side take on Rennes on Saturday as they continue their push for an 11th French league crown. Marseille sit third in the table, just one point behind leaders PSG, and Baup predicted a ste...

Klinsmann: Lewandowski must do what is right

United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann has urged Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski to follow his heart. The Pole is one of the most sought-after players in Europe, and now faces the option of whether to stay at Dortmund or move elsewhere. And having been in a similar position himself, Klinsmann has advised the 24-year-old to ignore outside pressure and make his own decision, rather than worry about what supporters or other dissenting voices might think. "I think the most important perspective to lookat it from is his own. If he's happy at Dortmund, and enjoying it, then keep enjoying it," Klinsmann told reporters. "If he's hungry for another adventure, then go.He should do what he feels is right. "If he decides to go to another league, whetherit's the English, Italian or Spanish, then it is hisdecision." However, the 48-year-old concedes that if Lewandowski was to leave Dortmund, then German football would be losing one of its brightest sta...

Spanish Copa dey Rey Update

Advance report. Barcelona will meet Real Madrid in this season's edition of the Spanish cup after the Catalans beat Málaga 2-4 on Thursday evening! Barça needed to win the return leg after the 2-2 draw in the Nou Camp last week, but although Pedro and then Piqué twice gave them the lead, goals from Joaquín and Santa Cruz levelled it both times. However strikes late on from Iniesta and Messi settled it in favour of Tito Vilanova's side, and they now visit the Bernabeu stadium for next Wednesday's first leg. Earlier in the evening Atlético Madrid won through to the last four after an aggregate 3-1 win against Betis. Diego Costa added to Atleti's two goal lead from the first leg with the opener on the stroke of half time, and Molina's last minute penalty came too late to change the result. Simeone's team will play Betis's city neighbours Sevilla, with the first leg in the Calderón stadium next Thursday. (24.01.13) Advance report. Real Madrid and Sevilla are the...

Newcastle complete signing of Massadio Haidara from Nancy

Newcastle have completed the signing of defender Massadio Haidara from Nancy on a five-and-a-half year contract. The 20-year-old left-back, who has represented France at Under-20 and Under-21 level, moved to St James' Park for an undisclosed fee. He said: "I like the club's ambition to strengthen the whole team so we can improve our league position - that's what appealed to me." Haidara has made 17 league appearances for Nancy this season. Newcastle manager Alan Pardew said: "Massadio is very highly thought of in France and he's somebody who our scouting team have been greatly impressed by. "At the age of 20, he will only continue to get better but he's already played a lot of games in his country's top division and represented France at Under-19, Under-20 and Under-21 level. "He's strong and quick and we're looking forward to seeing him develop here."

Laporta: 'Barcelona were offered Ronaldo and Mourinho.

Ex-Barcelona president Joan Laporta claims the club were offered Cristiano Ronaldo before he joined Manchester United, but they didn't have the finances. Barcelona had just signed Ronaldinho, Ricardo Quaresma and Rafael Marquez at this time. Laporta also claims Jose Mourinho was offered to him by Portuguese super-agent Jorge Mendes, but he already had Pep Guardiola in mind as Barcelona's long-term manager. "Mendes called me to ask if we were interested in Mourinho, but we had decided to go for Pep Guardiola. Pep was the ideal person to take the gameplay ideology and the philosophy forward. We always thought it would turn out well but the reality exceeded all expectations."

Kaka left out of Copa squad

Kaka has been left out of Real Madrid's 20-man squad for the Copa del Rey quarter-final second-leg against Valencia. The Brazilian playmaker has been linked with a move to Milan over the past few days, however, the Italian club's vice- President Adriano Galliani yesterday admitted that the deal was off. The 30-year-old attacker is still not in the squad for the cup match at Mestalla though, with Jose Mourinho otherwise calling upon his strongest available names. Goalkeepers: Casillas, Adan and Tomas Mejias. Defenders: Varane, Coentrao, Carvalho, Arbeloa, Albiol, Nacho. Midfielders: Khedira, Ozil, Alonso, Essien, Modric, Di María Callejón. Forwards: Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema, Higuain, Morata.

Valencia won't bow down to Madrid

Ernesto Valverde has claimed that his Valencia side will not 'bow down' to Real Madrid as they face Los Blancos in the Copa del Rey. Los Che host Jose Mourinho's side in the quarter-final second-leg on Wednesday, and the 48-year-old has admitted that his team will go for the win, despite being down 2-0 from the first-leg and also having lost to the capital side 5-0 at the weekend. “Against Madrid we cannot just bow down,” he told a Press conference. “We can't just sit back – we have to go forward and try for the win. “We'll see what happens. So far we have not played well against them. I hope for a win, but beyond that we must ensure that the team is proud of what they have done. “Things like last weekend happen sometimes. We just have to make sure the same mistakes are not repeated.” He also commented on the supporters’ adverse reaction since he took over last month. “I understand that there is a feeling of frustration,” he said. “Everyone wants to win all of the t...

Real Madrid president Florentino meets with Casillas, Ramos to discuss Mourinho

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez lunched with key members of staff and the squad yesterday. Marca says Perez met with Real players Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos, along with GM Jose Angel Sanchez to discuss their progress. The lunch served to discuss coach Jose Mourinho, player bonuses and the spirit within the squad. Mourinho was aware of the summit. It's understood Ramos and Casillas assured Perez that the relationship between the squad and Mourinho was rock solid and they were determined to win the Copa and Champions League this season. Should they win the Champions League, Real players will earn around €400,000 each.

Ashley Cole sign New Deal

Long-serving Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole has signed a one-year extension to his contract, the Premier League club said on Tuesday. Uncertainty over the England international's Stamford Bridge future had alerted a number of big clubs but the 32-year- old said he wants to win more silverware in West London. "I am pleased I will be starting my eighth season at Chelsea," Cole told Chelsea's website. "I have great memories here and I enjoy coming to training every day. I have been able to fulfil nearly all my ambitions at Chelsea. I have won the Champions League, the League, I have won FA Cups here but of course you don't want to stop winning trophies and being at a big club. "I wanted to stay at Chelsea because we are always fighting and challenging for trophies. That desire and the will to want to win things have not gone." Media reports had linked former Arsenal player Cole with possible moves to Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain though interim m...

Fabregas: We must respect Valdes decision

Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas has urged fans not to withdraw their support for goalkeeper Victor Valdes even though he has decided to leave the La Liga club next year. Spain's number two behind Real Madrid's Iker Casillas, Valdes, 31, has been at Barca since joining their academy in 1995 but has said he is keen to experience other leagues and cultures and will not stay beyond June 2014 when his contract expires. "What we have to do is respect his decision and leave it at that because we have to fight for titles," Fabregas told a news conference on Tuesday. "Football carries on, the club too and the most important thing is the trophies we can win at the end of the season," added the former Arsenal captain. "We should be worried if he trains poorly and it's the exact opposite. He seems like a youth player at first-team training. "He has given the club a lot of time to find a solution. He did not think of himself but of the club and the team ...

Scolari, who led Brazil to their 2002 World Cup title and returned for a second stint in November, also left out Kaka and gave another chance to striker Luis Fabiano for the friendly against England next month. Scolari has less than 18 months to build a team capable of winning a sixth world title for Brazil on home soil. Gibbs: The moment I thought my career was over

Arsenal’s Gibbs on the moment he thought his career was over Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs has acquired something of an ‘injury-prone’ label but, like his teammate Abou Diaby, he believes that he can trace the majority of his injury problems back to the time when he suffered a broken bone. A tackle by Standard Liege’s Eliaquim Mangala in November 2009 left Gibbs with a broken metatarsal which ended his season. Since then he has made just 30 appearances in the league in two years but, speaking to the Arsenal magazine this month, Gibbs believes all of his problems stem from that one incident. Gibbs said Breaking my foot triggered quite a lot of my injuries. It took me eight or nine months to get over that injury, which turned out to be really serious in the end. I remember the doctor ringing me. He said he had bad news, and I thought he was going to tell me I wouldn’t be able to play again. In fact, he told me I needed to have more surgery, and funnily enough the boost that gave me was massive,...

The Newcastle boss is also facing a fight to keep hold of his captain  source: BBC

FIRST DEFEAT OF THE SEASON

arcelona lost in La Liga for the first time this season, falling to a shock 3-2 defeat at mid-table Real Sociedad. Goals from Lionel Messi and Pedro put the Catalan side 2-0 up at half-time. But Uruguayan winger Gonzalo Castro scored twice for the hosts, either side of a red card for Barca's ex-Manchester United defender Gerard Pique. And Tito Vilanova's men were left without even a point when Imanol Agirretxe poked in from close range in injury time.  Barcelona have started the season in record-breaking fashion, accumulating 55 points from a possible 57, their only dropped points a draw against Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid. And, even in defeat,   Ballon d'Or winner Messi   closed in on yet another goalscoring milestone, having now found the net in 10 consecutive La Liga matches to tie the record held by former Brazilian striker Ronaldo, who accomplished the feat with Barcelona in the 1996-97 season.  looked as though the league leaders were set for anothe...

AFCON 2013 Team Focus: Ivory Coast

Image
Arguably, Ivory Coast are the best team in Africa, and they’ve been the best team in Africa for a long time. Didier Drogba’s age and impending retirement won’t change that with a variety of capable target men waiting in the wings. They’re deep in midfield and on the wings, and while they’re not deep in defense, their starting back line is still one of the best on the continent. There’s no footballing reason to not pick them to win the Africa Cup of Nations. It was a similar case last year, when Drogba missed a key penalty in the final against Zambia, who went on to lift the Cup. It was the case three years ago, when they were shockingly bounced out of the quarterfinals by Algeria. Their 2008 loss to a Cameroon side led by Samuel Eto’o in his prime and their 2006 loss to Egypt in Egypt were more understandable, but they were probably the most talented side in those tournaments as well. It’s been nearly a decade since Ivory Coast weren’t one of the top sides on the contine...

OFFICIAL: Theo Walcott signs new long-term contract

Image
Arsenal Football Club is delighted to announce that  Theo Walcott  has signed a new long-term contract. The 23-year-old forward has already made 244 first team appearances since joining Arsenal from Southampton in January 2006, during which time he has scored 56 goals. Walcott has also established himself as a regular England international during his time with Arsenal. Having signed for the Club at the age of 16 from Southampton, Theo soon won a call-up to England’s 2006 World Cup squad. Later that year, he became the country’s youngest-ever full international at 17 years and 75 days when he faced Hungary. Walcott currently has 30 international caps. The lightning-fast forward is enjoying another good season and is currently Arsenal’s leading goalscorer with 14 goals in all competitions. This tally includes two hat tricks - at Reading in the 7-5 Capital One Cup victory and also against Newcastle United in the 7-3 Premier League victory at Emirates Stadium. Manager Arsène Wen...
