Top 50 Richest French Sports Persons’ list: The Footballers
1) Karim Benzema: €13m (Real
Madrid):
Often the leading figure in the
French national team attack
(rightly or wrongly) Karim
Benzema owes his wealth to a
string of sponsorship contracts,
including personal ones with EA,
Adidas, Hyundai and Buzz Mobile.
3) Franck Ribery: €11.5m
(Bayern Munich):
Ribery has accumulated his vast
wealth over a relatively long
period of time, and has dropped
2 places off the top spot from
last year’s rankings. He is the
highest paid foreigner in the
Bundesliga and his sponsors
including the likes of Nike.
4) Nicolas Anelka: €11m
(Juventus):
A man who has shot up 12 places
in L’Equipe’s sports rich list
this year, mainly down to the
lucrative contract he secured
during his time with Shanghai
Shenhua (€933,000 a month). His
wealth has reportedly increased
by a massive €5.9m this year.
6) Samir Nasri: €10.5m
(Manchester City):
He remains in the position he
inhabited last year in these
rankings, despite a €3.2m
increase in his wealth on last
year. He has been capitalising
on the wages he has received at
Manchester City, reportedly
double of what he earned at
former employers Arsenal.
7) Thierry Henry: €9.4m (New
York Red Bulls):
Down 3 places on last year, one
can only assume excessive
spending and/or investment has
caused the small increase of
just €2ook on his overall
earnings. He still receives
€4.34m a year as a New York Red
Bulls man. Henry has a whole
host of sponsors, including
Puma.
9) Yoann Gourcuff: €6.7m
(Lyon):
The highest ranked French
footballer playing in Ligue 1,
he receives a yearly salary of
around €475k. One has to say
Gourcuff has done reasonably
well for himself, considering
the small amount of playing time
he has had this season. He has a
lucrative sponsorship deal with
Adidas too.
10) Patrice Evra: €6.4m
(Manchester United):
After a wage hike on his latest
contract extension, Evra remains
in 10th position in these
rankings as of last year. On a
yearly salary of around €500k
after tax, the Frenchman has
been able to profit from the
relatively weak Euro in
comparison with the English
pound over the past year.
